Prayer for Children at Risk

Thank you for joining us this month as we take up “The Invitation” and join together with thousands of YWAMers from around the world as we pray and hear from God about Children at Risk.

Children and youth today represent a future hope for the kingdom of God. But today we see many gaps where God’s intentions for this generation of children and youth are not being realized. Children face tremendous suffering and risk around the world. Please join with YWAM this month as we pray for the world’s vulnerable children.

Today’s worldwide gaps:

  1. Child mortality: Every day, 15,000 children under five years of age die. In developing countries, half of those deaths are caused by malnutrition.
  2. Child soldiers: There are an estimated 250,000 child soldiers (some as young as seven years old) in the world today in at least 20 countries. About 40 percent of child soldiers are girls, who are often used as sex slaves and taken as “wives” by male fighters.
  3. Children and youth in crime, drugs and violence: Central and South America are experiencing a dramatic upswing in youth crime. “The drug mafia recruits children as young as nine or 10,” says Guaraci de Campos Viana, the chief justice of Rio de Janeiro’s juvenile court. “Children have no sense of danger. Being a member of a drug gang gives them a sort of adrenaline rush.”
  4. Street children: Many boys and girls under 18 years, find that “the street” has become home or their source of livelihood. They are inadequately protected or supervised. There are many more who are at risk due to the family situation. In 1989 it was estimated there were 100 million street children worldwide.
  5. Residential care versus family-based care: Worldwide many are now working toward a goal to have children living with foster families, adoptive families or in family-like settings, as opposed to traditional orphanages.   6. Sexual abuse and exploitation: Every day, across all countries and levels of society, millions of girls and boys face the alarmingly common childhood experience of sexual abuse and exploitation. Child sexual abuse is likely the most prevalent health problem children face with the most serious array of consequences. About one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. About one in seven girls and one in 25 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18.
  7. Refugee children: There are 70.8 million people forcibly displaced worldwide, as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations. Everyday this number grows 37,000 of which 50 percent are children! Many are unaccompanied or separated children, which puts them in an even more vulnerable situation. Refugee children and youth often are out of school and become easy victims of sexual exploitation.

YWAM offers many opportunities for students and staff to stand in one of those gaps and bring healing and restoration to those children, youth, their families and communities. As we do so, we can see a new hope for the kingdom of God.

Prepare to Pray:

As your group prepares to pray, you are invited to settle into the time by having someone read aloud from Mark’s gospel, chapter 10:

“People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.’ And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them” (Mark 10, 13-16).

If you have children in your group and it seems appropriate, have an adult near them extend a hand of blessing to them. Then have someone read aloud: “When he came into the world, the Son of God became a child and grew in wisdom, age, and grace in the eyes of God and of all who knew him. Jesus welcomed children, believed in their dignity, and held them up as a model for all who are seeking the kingdom of God. Children need the help of grown-ups if they are to develop their individual gifts, and their moral, mental, and physical powers, and so reach human and Christian maturity. So, we ask for God’s blessing, not only on the children of our community but also on all children growing up in this beautiful yet broken world of ours.”

Then have someone read aloud from Matthew’s gospel, chapter 18:

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ’Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’ “ (Matthew 18, 1-5)

As you go into the main part of this prayer time, consider the final phrase of the scripture above. Could the ways we make room for children be ways of making room for Jesus? What does this say about the ways we do not welcome children, sometimes limiting or even harming them? Hold onto this thought as you go to prayer.

Pray for Children At Risk:

  • Pray for better healthcare for pregnant women in developing countries and for healthcare for newborn children. Pray also for food and nutrition for children in developing countries.
  • Pray for children who live on the streets.
  • Pray for the refugee children who make up 50 percent of all the displaced people in the world, for protection and educational opportunities.
  • Pray for the enormous number of children and youth who become victims of sexual abuse all around the world.
  • Pray for the children and youth who become victims of violence because of recruitment into gangs.
  • Pray for children who ended up in institutional care.
  • Pray for children and youth that were forced to become child soldiers because of armed conflicts.
  • Pray for these children to hear the truth of the gospel and to receive hope and new direction in life.
  • Pray for YWAM students and staff who work with these children. Pray for boldness and protection and provision. Pray that God will raise up more workers to reach children at risk.

Prayer for the Hindu World

Hindu World – 15 Days of Prayer

Hindus are the second-largest least-reached religious group in the world, with only about two percent of cross-cultural missionaries focused on sharing the gospel with them. The majority of the world’s 1.1 billion Hindus still live without any meaningful access to the gospel of Jesus Christ. This month, we invite you to pray for Hindus on September 12 as part of YWAM’s global prayer day, called The Invitation, and we also invite you to join the 15 Days prayer focus on the Hindu World.

15 Days is an annual prayer movement that calls Christians and churches worldwide to take 15 days, October 20 – November 3 to learn about and pray for Hindus around the world. This period encompasses the significant Hindu Festival of Lights called Diwali (or Deepawali) which is the most notable festival of Hindus and an excellent time to pray for and share with Hindus the precious love of Christ, the light of the world. Prayer guides are available in several languages and are either free or available for a nominal price depending on the country. You may access the prayer guides here: www.pray15days.org.

Prepare to Pray:

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

As you prepare to pray, consider that Jesus declared Himself to be the light of the world and also declared that His people are the light of the world. Think of a way to represent that light in the place where you will be praying: could you light candles, shine torches/flashlights, pray as the sun rises, or find other ways to bring to mind this powerful image of Jesus and His people bringing light into dark places? Let this physical action of bringing light become your focus and attitude in prayer. May our prayers for the Hindu world be shining shafts of light into the darkness, that the light of Christ’s presence may fully come among those who do not yet know him.

Pray for the Hindu World:

  • Pray for the more than 2,000 YWAM staff who work in South Asia. Many of them work directly with Hindu people.
  • Pray for the 2,328 unreached Hindu people groups (https://joshuaproject.net/religions/5) and that they will turn to Christ. India is where most Hindus live, compromising about 80% of its almost 1.4 Billion person population. But Hindus also have large populations in Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
  • Pray for Bible translation and distribution efforts in the Hindu world and the ending of Bible poverty. Many Hindus do not have Scripture available in their language or do not have access to the Bible or biblical education in any meaningful form. The Bible is the worker who never sleeps, never gets tired, doesn’t require support and always bears fruit.
  • Pray that Hindus would have life-changing encounters with Christ as they set out on pilgrimage and search for God, often each year.
  • Pray that God would start more movements of Hindus who will turn towards Him in all types of Hindu communities.

How We Prayed

 August 2019 – U of N

  • We heard from multiple people about the words they sensed from God during their time of prayer: the Jubilee; simple; a sense of coming back to basic truth; trust; fellowship; and this is dedicated ministry.

July 2019 – Central Europe

  • YWAM Ozarks in Arkansas: “We distributed the Central Europe map that was included with the description of prayer needs and then we each took on the identity of a nation in the region. One became Croatian, another a Macedonian, someone else a Romanian, etc. About 15 minutes was given to research our particular nations and then we reported from a first-person perspective. We talked a little about our nation’s history, our strengths, our challenges, the religious beliefs that most of us in our country shared, etc. Some told about these crazy people they have in their neighborhood, called Youth With A Mission and what they seem to be doing. After each one shared about his/her identity as a Croatian, etc., we prayed for the nation and its people. Taking on a personal identity of people from these nations made them come alive to us. At the close there was a friendly competition over just who was the hardest working nation, Hungary or Poland” (see picture above).

21 Days of Prayer & Fasting for the UofN

This year, YWAM is celebrating 50 years of training. It all began with a small group of young adults studying evangelism in Lausanne, Switzerland. This year YWAM has set aside time to remember, to pray, and to look to the future of YWAM’s training, which has now grown into a global university called the University of the Nations. Please join us on August 8, for YWAM’s global prayer day, called The Invitation, as we pray for YWAM’s training.

This day is also the kickoff for 21 days of prayer and fasting for the University of the Nations from August 8 – August 28.   This will be a time as a family of ministries where we seek God together, wait on Him and pray what He has shown us. We believe the Lord is leading us in a time of transition and a time of going deeper in Him for His purposes for the U of N. We believe your prayer will provide a protection and preparation for the Holy Spirit to lead us afresh into this phase of growth and multiplication.

We encourage your family, ministries and teams to enter into this time, to give up some type of normal indulgence such as food or media and to seek God together. Together we will pray and fast and look at some of our foundations in the U of N and look to the Lord for His direction and leading into the future.

If you only have a few moments to pray please pray that everyone involved in YWAM’s training will receive direction and leading from the Lord into the future.

Prepare to Pray:

The spiritual practice of fasting has been interpreted in diverse ways in different Christian traditions. The purpose of this month’s prayer guidelines is not to dictate the way in which you choose to fast. Rather, through fasting we are deliberately taking our physical or emotional hunger, and turning our hearts towards the things of God. That is, we embrace an increase of natural hunger and allow it to become a prompt that turns our awareness – the intentions of our hearts – towards God.

During the 21 days covered by this month’s prayer guide, you may choose to fast in the way that you sense the Holy Spirit nudging you. While this will be a personal response – because the Spirit of God knows our individual appetites and what sort of fasting is most helpful for us – you may also agree to a corporate rhythm of fasting with your community or team.

  • You could choose to fast from one meal each day, or on certain days over the 21 days. This mealtime can then become a time of prayer.
  • You could choose to fast from food for an entire day, on certain days over the 3 weeks. Again, these days can become special times of focused prayer.
  • You could opt for simple meals throughout the 3 weeks, choosing not to eat meat, sweets, or rich foods, for example.
  • You could choose to disconnect from social media, or other entertainment for 3 weeks.
  • You could choose to avoid all purchases for 3 weeks, other than absolute necessities.

The point here is that during the fasting period, when your attention is captured by your desire for food, or sweets, or for entertainment or distraction, you pause and reflect:

  • To what extent does your hunger for God and His good future exceed your hunger for these passing satisfactions?
  • In what way can this appetite for something temporary remind you to turn to God out of longing for Him?

When you do have the opportunity to gather as a group, reflect together on the ways God has deepened your desire for His purposes to be fulfilled as you have engaged in fasting.

Pray for the UofN:

  • Praise God for his vision for, creation of and sustainment of YWAM’s University of the Nations (U of N).
  • Pray for the 50th celebration in Lausanne from August 30 to September 2. Pray for heart preparation for those attending and pray for the YWAM family unable to attend – that God would be speaking to all.
  • Pray for God’s leading and revelation in prayer over these next 21 days.
  • Pray for God’s strategies for YWAM’s training programs as we enter this new season. Ask God to take YWAM deeper into His understanding and heart for training and discipleship.
  • Pray that the foundations that shaped the U of N would remain firm as we continue to build and multiply geographically, into all spheres of society and in all aspects of the Great Commission.
  • Pray for appropriate structures for the U of N in a time of growth.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit to teach us His way forward and to teach us His strategies for development.
  • Pray that all of our training and teaching would be filled with the compassion of Jesus (Mark 6:34).

When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

  • Pray for effective servant leadership in every school, every campus, and every ministry associated with our campuses.
  • Pray for revelation in areas of His vision, ways of teaching, managing, communicating and working together in community.
  • Ask God to place safeguards so that the U of N globally and in your area will flourish for the next generations.
  • Pray for insight into new training courses and release of workers from your location.
  • Pray for standards of excellence and God’s favor.
  • Pray for DTSes in your region.
  • Pray for greater capacity to train people from everywhere to go everywhere.
  • Pray that every U of N campus would be an educational resource to the nations.
  • Pray that all generations would continue to serve and train together at all levels in honoring, loving and biblical ways.
  • Pray for a fresh wave of prayer.

How We Prayed

 July 2019 – Central Europe

  • YWAM King’s Gardens – Pune, India sent in the two photos shown above of their prayer time and reported that they “always have a powerful and blessed time when we join in The Invitation.” They are very grateful for the privilege.
  • YWAM Seamill, Scotland prayed for Central Europe and reported that God revealed something for each country with Hungary highlighted. For Hungary they sensed an angel like a lion roaring over the nation proclaiming His love for the nation. They also sensed Jesus is washing the feet of the nation, cleansing them from all condemnation and shame of the past. And finally, from the cracks of division the Lord will display His union of the body to Jesus.

Central Europe

This month, please join YWAM in prayer for a very diverse part of the world. This is a place where many countries have been at war with each other or have oppressed each other. It’s a place where Catholicism, Islam and Orthodoxy meet. Please pray with us for Central Europe and for YWAM’s work there.

The YWAM Central Europe area is made up of 16 countries: Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia with a combined population of over 130 million people. At present YWAM has about 250 full-time staff working here, with almost half working in Romania.

There is much division and disunity within and between these countries. The word “balkanise”, which is named after the Balkan peninsula where many Central European countries are found, means “to divide (a region or body) into smaller mutually hostile states or groups.” Our biggest mandate as YWAM Central Europe is to come against this propensity to divide and instead reconcile, and work together in unity within countries and across borders.

Other significant issues in Central Europe include the post-communism way of thinking that is prevalent in Central Europe; human trafficking due to the high numbers of young people seeking better economic conditions through migration; a heavy flow of refugees wanting to reach the richer countries of the European Union that instead find themselves in camps unable to reach “the promised land”; and the discrimination of the Romani or Roma people.

Prepare to Pray:

If you are praying with a group, consider this activity as a way to focus on Central Europe. You will need to prepare:

  1. A large poster size hand drawn map using the above picture as a reference for the group to use or a black and white print for each participant of a simple line map of the region. (You may even click on the above picture, save it as a picture, and print as a full page or larger photo for each participant.)
  2. A selection of random images pre-cut from magazines (these could include landscapes, objects, people alone or in groups – avoid anything with lots of writing). Spread the images on a table so that they can easily be seen.
  3. Scissors and glue.

Before looking at the images, remind everyone that this is a way of preparing our hearts to listen to God’s desires for the region. Everyone is to chose from the images a selection of four to eight that they are drawn to. They may notice these images in particular because they feel attracted to an aspect of beauty, peace, connection or abundance. Or they may especially notice an image that repels them because it portrays an element of disorder, fear or scarcity. Resist the desire to over-think the exercise, or to try to ‘make meaning.’ Everyone should simply choose those images that seem to draw their attention.

In a prayerful way–listening to God and noticing one’s own feelings–allow a few minutes for people to stick their images on the map. It may be that they want to arrange them along boundary lines between nations, or on particular nations. This does not need to take long.

Finally, leave some time for people to reflect on the map collage they have created. They might do this in pairs. Be open to the possibility that God may use the pictures, or the way they have been arranged, to speak to people as they move to prayer. Rather than trying to explain or make the pictures mean anything, simply be sensitive to how they might reflect, in some way, the heart of God for the people of Central Europe. Hold onto this sense of God’s longings for the region as you go to prayer.

Pray for Central Europe:

  • Pray for a spirit of unity and reconciliation amongst the nations in Central Europe.
  • Pray that the gospel of the Kingdom will be preached and demonstrated in practical ways to bring revival and engagement among the youth who are looking for a valid alternative.
  • Pray for ways to impact the nations, so that migration to the West is not seen as the only alternative, but instead young people will want to stay in their home countries and make a difference there.
  • Pray for those caught in the web of human trafficking, that they will be able to get out and find help and healing. More than one million people work in the multi-billion dollar commercial sex industry in Europe. Many have been trafficked from Central and Eastern Europe and are stigmatized, isolated and trapped. Please pray for their freedom, fresh opportunities for safe dignified work and committed people who will help them start a new life.
  • Pray for refugees in Central Europe, especially those coming from a Muslim background, to find Jesus while they are in these crisis situations.
  • Pray for the marginalized Roma community to rise up and take their place in society so they can impact not only on their own community, but also the nations where they live.
  • Praise God for the increase of YWAM staff in Central Europe in recent years!

And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

  • Pray for more workers – there is a real need in our region, and so few workers. In fact, we have two countries, Montenegro and Moldova where there is no full-time YWAM presence. There are also four other countries where there are less than five staff in total: Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Macedonia. Pray especially for Slovenia which until this year had no YWAM presence!

Unfortunately, his prediction became true and Adri was trafficked in her teens to be exploited for sex. She is one of the thousands of women who have been made vulnerable due to poverty and abuse and have been exploited in the multi-billion euro commercial sex industry of Europe.
    • Come help us minister to these ladies caught in the trap of human trafficking. HOPE DIES LAST is a justice ministry reaching out creatively to trafficked, marginalized and exploited people. They create media for under-resourced organizations and address the root causes of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. How We Prayed

 June 2019 – Mozambique

  • YWAM Diriamba, Nicaragua prayed and sensed God giving them words including verses from 1 Kings, Philippians, Joshua, Joel and Genesis. They saw that God sent ravens to feed Elijah and they asked for similar for Mozambique. They sensed that God desires people be healed internally.
  • Several posted on Facebook and shared The Invitation to Pray for Mozambique 93 times. One asked for blessings for YWAM and the people of Mozambique, another thanked the Lord for those who will go, another thanked the Lord for providing aid and one shared Jeremiah 29:11.
  • A young man from Goma, Democratic Republic Congo reported that he prayed and sensed God would provide the people with hope.

Beira, Mozambique after Cyclone Idai

On March 14th a category three cyclone made landfall in Mozambique. Just six weeks later on April 25th another cyclone came ashore a bit farther north in Mozambique. Significant rains before and after these cyclones also impacted the neighboring countries of Zimbabwe and Malawi. Please join with Youth With A Mission’s global prayer day this month as we lift up the people of Mozambique and surrounding countries and evangelistic and aid workers in those areas, including YWAMers.

According to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, cyclone Idai has affected over 1.85 million people with at least 130,000 people displaced over four provinces in Mozambique. A minimum of 112,000 houses were damaged or destroyed. At least 715,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed at the beginning of the main harvest season. Over 400,000 people have been reached with food assistance, while 10,000 people are being helped with ready-to-eat meals in the city of Beira. The death toll is over 750 in Mozambique alone.

YWAM locations in Beira and Dondo were directly impacted by Idai, making them strategically located to help others. YWAM Blantyre, Malawi is also assisting their neighbors and providing hope to people who have lost much. YWAM Muizenberg, South Africa has become a communication and coordinating point for YWAM efforts including disbursing donations and other resources, as well as working with other YWAM locations to coordinate the development and resettlement phase that officially began this month.

In addition to prayer, YWAM leaders in South Africa are asking us to be generous towards our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mozambique as they are in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medical supplies. See the Take Action section of The Invitation for ways to help, including sending teams for rebuilding.

Prepare to Pray:

Consider these two short portions from Lamentations chapter 3:

“The waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to perish. I called on your name, Lord, from the depths of the pit. You heard my plea: ‘Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.’ You came near when I called you, and you said, ‘Do not fear.’ You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’ The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

Lamentations 3, 54-58 and 22-26

In order to lead a group in their preparation time, it will help to have just these selected verses available for people to read, whether on a projected slide, or printed and available for each person.

These selected verses will be read aloud three times, either by one person or by someone different each time.

The first reading is an opportunity to simply notice which word or short phrase catches your attention. For a couple of minutes following the reading, allow time for people to speak out loud ‘popcorn style’ the word or phrase that struck them. Repetitions are fine, it is good to hear how God is speaking throughout the group.

The second reading is an opportunity to listen to the invitation the Lord may be bringing to you through these verses. This invitation may relate to the word or phrase you noticed in the first reading, or it may be something new. What is God inviting you to today? Perhaps He is inviting you to an attitude of compassion or trust? Maybe there is a step of faith He is inviting you to take? He may simply be inviting you to call on His name. Allow people a moment to jot this down in their journal.

The third and final reading is an opportunity to consider your response to this invitation from God. How does your heart respond to Him? In what way might you enter into the attitude or action to which He has invited you? You may wish to allow a short time of sharing as you move into prayer for Mozambique.

Pray for Mozambique:

  • Pray for God’s leading and for hope for the millions affected by cyclones Idai and Kenneth. Pray that those who don’t know Him yet will find Jesus through this storm in their lives.
  • The timing of Idai was just before harvest time for crops. Pray for provision of necessities between now and when the next crops are able to be harvested.
  • Pray for rebuilding of businesses, buildings and farms in such a way that there is greater abundance in the future.

The human cost is immense. Many people are understandingly emotional: “I am not crying because I lost things, but what I experienced was scary. I want to run away from this city!”

  • Praise God for the many other organizations that have provided aid and resources including RescueNet and Mercy Air. Their work has been phenomenal.
  • Praise God that no YWAMers were killed.
  • Praise God for the initial donations that have been provided. Pray for all funds needed to rebuild YWAM ministries including the school and orphanage in Beira and the preschool and clinic in Dondo.
  • Much rebuilding is still needed in Mozambique. There are many opportunities for YWAMers to reach out and help others. Pray for YWAMers directly impacted so they can help others effectively. Pray for continued resources and volunteers to support our YWAM locations impacted.
  • Pray for YWAMers and others who were traumatized and in need of counseling.
  • YWAM has solid ministries in these areas. Praise God for the impact that has already been made and ask Him to direct future ministries.
  • Praise God for the structure and resources of YWAM Muizenberg so that resources can be dispersed effectively and with discernment. Pray for wisdom from God.
  • There are many conflicting priorities. An example is that government officials want the people out of schools so that education can continue but temporary shelters are not always ready. Pray for governmental officials and leaders from aid organizations to collaborate effectively, making sure that all needs are addressed in a coordinated fashion so people are not further impacted by this disaster.
  • Pray for relief for the city of Beira, Mozambique where many people initially fled.
  • Many are still living in temporary refugee-type housing. Supplies are limited. Pray for adequate and equitable distribution of supplies.
  • Pray for all children and that even in the midst of the devastation their education can continue. Pray that all children will soon have schools where schools were destroyed.
  • All services including water, medical, electricity, police, postal and others were disrupted. Some serves are not yet fully restored. Pray for restoration of all services including water, electricity, police, postal and others. Pray for clean water sources.
  • The threat of disease is high. Pray for God to protect the people from these threats and for those who are sick to believe He can heal.
  • Pray for military and police officers who are guarding resettlement sites. Pray for their protection and that they will meet Jesus through their work. Pray for security of those they are protecting.

Preparing to Pray for Uyghurs People Group

How We Prayed

May 2019 – YWAM Uyghurs People Group

  • YWAM Chiang Rai, Thailand posted the picture above on Facebook and provided a report of how they prayed. One of their prayers was that the gospel would advance in the camps – like Paul influencing prisoners, guards, visitors, and the household of Caesar through his two years in chains. They also referenced Exodus 2:23-24 & 3:7-8;
    Psalm 146 and 1 Corinthians 10:4-5.
  • YWAM Harvest City, Otukpo, Nigeria prayed and reported: “We thank God for involving us in the prayer for the Uyghurs. We felt the Lord reminding us that he is able to do the impossible. He is the Lord who makes streams in desert places. He is able to turn the hearts of the communists running these detention camps to himself. Let us be encouraged as we continue to pray!”
  • YWAM Dunham, Quebec, Canada reported that they went down into a dark, cold and humid basement room and identified with those who live in darkness and oppression. With every prayer prayed we lit a candle representing the hope and light that God wants to bring to them. It was great to engage our senses and it added to the passion to pray for the Uyghur! They have also prayed for the Uyghurs since our global prayer day.

Uyghur People Group

Thank you for joining us this month as we take up “The Invitation” and join together with thousands of YWAMers from around the world as we pray and hear from God about the Uyghur People Group.

Uyghur Women

Please join with Youth With A Mission’s global prayer day this month as we lift up a large Muslim people group that is facing a crisis right now.

The Uyghur [WEE-gur] people numbers around 15 million. Their traditional homeland is located mainly in Xinjiang [SHIN-jong] province in Northwest China. In recent years, small numbers of Uyghurs have responded to the gospel, and at this time there are a few hundred Uyghur Christians.

Historically, the Uyghurs and communist China have had ongoing conflicts. But recently, things have escalated dramatically. Under the guise of eliminating Islamic extremism, approximately one million Uyghurs have been detained in “re-education camps,” usually indefinitely. The camps are overcrowded and the Uyghurs are forced to learn communist propaganda. Some detainees have claimed they were tortured. Outside the camps, conditions are not much better. Families are being torn apart and some businesses have closed because owners have “disappeared.”

There is a very small Uyghur Christian community that is also being targeted and most leaders and strong believers have been detained. The Uyghur Christian fellowships, small and fragile to begin with, have been driven almost out of existence.

Although Uyghurs are predominantly Muslim and have been for about 1,000 years, historical findings show that there was once a strong Christian community among the Uyghur tribe. They had many churches and were also involved in taking the gospel to other Central Asian peoples. Many Uyghur Christians believe that God wants to revive the destiny of the Uyghur people in these days. They believe that this involves many Uyghurs embracing the gospel and taking God’s good news across Central Asia. They also believe that the enemy is doing his best to stop this destiny from becoming a reality.

Will you join YWAM’s global prayer day, called The Invitation, this month and pray for the Uyghurs? You are particularly invited to pray during our prayer day, May 9. If you only have a few moments to pray we would ask you to pray for the ending of this oppression and for Uyghurs to turn to Jesus in great numbers. Let’s pray that the Uyghurs would rise up with identity restored, healed and bringing the Good News across Central Asia and the world. Xinjiang

Prepare to Pray:

Before you begin to pray, find a table from your classroom or dining room and cover it in blankets, drapes, or other fabric. It should be covered all around and right down to the floor. You may want to put additional blankets or cushions under the table, in the ‘tent’ you have created.

In groups of 3 or 4, have people sit in the darkness under the table for a few minutes at a time. While there, experiencing darkness, discomfort and confinement, bring to mind those Uyghrs who have been forcibly removed from their homes and families, who are persecuted and in terrible fear. Consider those Christian Uyghurs who are in detention even today. Allow yourself to imagine the loss, grief and fear they might be feeling.

As you experience the emotion of this place of darkness and great need, turn your longing towards God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – whose great desire and purpose is to rent open this darkness in order for the light of His presence to be made known. As you leave the shadows of the ‘tent’ where you have been sitting, you might want to make this declaration in faith for the Uyghur people:

“Through Jesus dark death has been destroyed and radiant life is everywhere restored!”

Remain in this heart place of identification and faith for the Uyghur as you move through your prayer time.

Uyghur Children

Pray for Uyghurs People Group:

  • Pray for the camps to close and oppression against Uyghurs to end.
  • Pray that the Uyghurs would rise up with identity restored, healed and bringing the Good News across Central Asia and the world.
  • Pray for governments and those in places of influence. “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” Proverbs 21:1
  • Pray for those in detention camps. “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” Matthew 4:16
  • Pray that the enemy’s plans for these camps would be halted.
  • Pray for the families of those in detention camps.
  • Pray for Xinjiang Province. “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” Habakkuk 2:14
  • Pray for God’s plans for Xinjiang to come to pass and for the enemy’s plans to be cancelled.
  • Pray that people in Xinjiang would cry out to God in their time of trouble.
  • Pray for Uyghurs in other parts of the world, like Central Asia, Europe and North America.
  • Pray for the Uyghur Church, that Christian fellowships would be restored and strengthened. “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18.
  • Pray for a spirit of forgiveness and that Uyghur Christians would actively forgive.
  • Pray that Uyghur Christians would sense God’s presence and peace. Pray that these believers would pray with hope and fervor.
  • Pray for prayer movements to cover the Uyghur’s situation. Pray for God to reveal strategies in prayer for the Uyghurs. “And I will pour on [them] the Spirit of grace and supplication.” Zechariah 12:10
  • Pray for Uyghur believers to be released from detention camps.
  • Pray for missionaries to the Uyghurs. Pray that God would call missionaries to the Uyghurs and equip them to participate in what He is going to do.
  • Praise God for His love for those in Xinjiang and His plans for the Uyghur people.
  • Praise God that Jesus has died for the Uyghur’s salvation and restoration.
  • Praise God that there are Uyghurs who believe in Jesus and follow Him.

The Uyghur people in China stand in urgent need of prayer in this hour. Forgotten by the world, the Uyghur people’s only hope is that God would move mightily on their behalf.

  • Our prayers are powerful to get His kingdom to come on the earth! Expand your prayer influence for the Uyghurs:
    • Raise the awareness of the need to pray for Uyghurs with others (prayer chains, prayer groups, etc.).

    • Invite others to pray. Many intercessors are unaware of this situation. But agreement and unity increase the power of our prayers many-fold! Feel free to copy and distribute this prayer guide.
  • Conduct research using suggestions below. After conducting research on your own or in a group pray to God and ask Him what He would have you do.

Praying For YWAM Foundational Values (16 – 18)

In January of last year we began praying for YWAM’s Foundational Values, three at a time, once per quarter. This issue of The Invitation marks the completion of this prayer campaign. Please join us in praying for ourselves and for the whole YWAM family to live out these final three values: to depend on God, to practice hospitality, and to communicate with integrity.

According to Rita Pretorius, who provided input to The Invitation, “Be Hospitable” was one of YWAM’s first values, along with our motto “To know God and to make Him known.” Rita believes that “hospitality helped us, as YWAM, to stay a loving community and not to become an institution. Being hospitable is part of our DNA because it is not about programs or a method, it is all about relationships.”

Terry Sherman also noted that the biblical examples of Value 16, Practice Dependence on God, “are about God connecting people to make mutual provision – it’s never one-sided, but both parties are blessed in some way. It’s all about partnership and interdependence.”

And as we take a look at our final value, Communicate With Integrity, YWAM has teams that model and teach on this value in a relational way. Some of these groups are the College of Communication at YWAM’s University of the Nations, Create International, and Circle 18.

Here is the full text of these three values:

Value 16: Practice dependence on God – YWAM is called to practice a life of dependence upon God for financial provision. For individuals and YWAM corporately this comes primarily through His people. As God has been generous toward us, so we desire to be generous. YWAMers give themselves, their time and talents to God through the mission with no expectation of remuneration (Gen 22:12-14; Exo 36:2-7; Num 18:25-29; Mal 3:8-12; Mat 6:25-33; Luk 19:8-9; 2Co 8:1-9:15; Php 4:10-20; Tit 3:14; 3Jo 5-8).

Value 17: Practice hospitality – YWAM affirms the ministry of hospitality as an expression of God’s character and the value of people. We believe it is important to open our hearts, homes, campuses and ministry centers to serve and honor one another, our guests and the poor and needy, not as acts of social protocol, but as expressions of generosity (Gen 18:1-8; 2Sa 9:1-11; Psa 68:5-6; Pro 22:9; Isa 58:7; Mat 25:31 46; Acts 28:7-8; Rom 12:13; Heb 13:1-3; 1Pe 4:9).

Value 18: Communicate with integrity – YWAM affirms that everything exists because God communicates. Therefore, YWAM is committed to truthful, accurate, timely and relevant communication. We believe good communication is essential for strong relationships, healthy families and communities, and effective ministry (Gen 1:3-5; Num 23:19; Pro 10:19; Pro 25:9-14; Zec 8:16-17; Mat 5:33-37; Luke 4:16-22; Joh 1:1 5; Col 4:6; Jam 3:1-18).

Prepare to Pray:

As you gather to pray, have a conversation about the different ways of greeting people you have encountered in different cultures. In what ways have different greetings made you feel welcome, or perhaps not welcome? Perhaps you have experienced moments of confusion, when you were not sure whether to hug or not hug? Or you thought two kisses were normal, when really it was three? How did these moments of confusion make you feel? What are some of the ways you have gone out of your way to greet those from other cultures in ways that would make them feel welcome and at ease?

Henri Nouwen reminds us that every good relationship between two or more people, whether it is friendship, marriage, or community, creates space where strangers can enter and become friends. Good communication and good relationships are both hospitable in nature.

When we enter into a home and feel warmly welcomed, we will soon realize that the love among those who live in that home is what makes possible the welcome that is communicated. Discuss together, what would your communication look like or sound like as an expression of love between you and God, offered to others? What would your behavior be like? How might you approach your prayer and funding partners differently as you bear in mind the values of hospitality and honoring communication?

Pray for YWAM Foundational Values 16 – 18:

  • Praise God for giving wisdom to our leaders regarding our foundational values and ask Him how you can model and teach our values more effectively.

Practice Dependence on God:

  • “You are workers, worthy to be supported” (Matthew 10:10 and Luke 10:7).  Jesus so clearly taught the disciples their identity involved doing real work which was worthy to be supported through housing and food. Pray for biblical understanding to spread which will give confidence to gospel spreaders to do their legitimate work and have freedom to invite partnership.
  • Pray that churches, pastors and elders will gain understanding of their role as “senders” of gospel spreaders; of their role in the Great Commission.

Practice Hospitality:

  • Pray for a greater revelation of hospitality in our mission and how it effects our ministries. Pray for a deeper understanding for God’s heart for people. Hospitality is not a method – it is a relationship with God first and then people. According to Christine D Pohl, “Faithful hospitality usually involves laying our lives down in little pieces, in small acts of sacrificial love and service. Part of the mystery is that while such concrete acts of love are costly, they nourish and heal both giver and recipient.”
  • Pray for an outpouring of honor, beauty and generosity in our YWAM communities.
  • Pray for all leaders to understand this value and put it into practice in their own lives and model it to the communities.
  • Pray for a fresh wave of hospitality hosts and hostesses in our mission.

Hospitality is the golden thread that connects us as YWAMers internationally, and also the hearts of the local communities where we serve.

  • Pray for revelation and understanding on how we can best walk in hospitality as a lifestyle. Pray for a fresh understanding to realize that hospitality is not just practical, but indeed very spiritual.
  • Pray that God would show us ways to welcome the broken and the stranger into our homes and communities. Pray that we would create welcome places for ourselves, but also safe spaces where we welcome our guests, staff and trainees.
  • Pray for school leaders to embrace this value and practice it during the duration of the training program and not only during the initial welcome.
  • Thank the Lord for all the hosts and hostesses who have worked in YWAM’s hospitality departments over the years. This is sometimes a thankless job.
  • Ask the Lord to enlarge our hearts … to receive all people. He is faithful and will do that if we ask.

Communicate With Integrity:

  • Pray for YWAMers to be good communicators.
  • Pray for clear communication within YWAM.
  • Pray for the launch of YWAM TV.
  • Pray for Two-Thirds World YWAMers to know how to use gadgets of communication that will improve their ministry.
  • Pray for networking of communicators. Some of them work alone and need a team.
  • Pray for Lynn Green, who provides eldership oversight for YWAM’s global communication. Pray also for Circle 18, the team that works with Lynn on communication projects.
  • Pray for YWAM’s communication ministries: that they would inspire many people to get involved in serving God’s purposes for the world; that they would help YWAM grow in fruitfulness; and that they would encourage an environment of spiritual vitality in YWAM.
  • Pray for Create International (createinternational.com), and their ministry of producing evangelistic audio visuals for unreached people groups.
  • Pray for the University of the Nations’ College of Communication, that they would train people well to communicate with integrity.
  • Pray for The Invitation, which is one of YWAM’s communication ministries. Pray for the translators and editors. Pray for YWAMers to continue to submit prayer ideas. And pray for prayer coordinators in YWAM to have the leading of God as they invite people to pray.

Practice Dependence on God:

Practice Hospitality:

  • Romans 12:13 says “Practice hospitality.” If we don’t practice it, it is difficult to pull off at the moment when we need it. Be intentional to practice hospitality. Begin with your own family.
  • Organize a workshop at your location that addresses: “How can we as YWAMers practice hospitality to the marginalized and the communities around us?” Incorporate the results into your ministries and practices and share with others within YWAM.
  • Attend or host hospitality training seminars. There is one in Harpenden, England in May: https://ywamharpenden.org/hospitality-seminar/
  • Take time to study God’s word on Hospitality: Genesis 18:1-10; 1 Peter 4:9-10; Hebrews 6:10, 10:24, 13:2; Isaiah 58:7-9; Acts 2:44-46; Mark 9:41, 10:43-45; Philippians 2:3-4; Galatians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 3:2; Proverbs 3:27, 11:25; Romans 15:32, 16:2, 12:9-13, 12:16, 12:20; Luke 14:12-13; John 13:14-16; Matthew 25:37-40; Colossians 4:5.
  • Reach out to people who are not your friends.

March 2019 – The Mobilization of Two-Thirds-World Senders

  • We received emails from missionaries in developing countries requesting prayer for provision and emails from several people around the world committing to pray for senders of Two-Thirds World missionaries.
    • A former DTS Student in Cameroon requested prayer for God to provide in accordance with the calling of him and his fiancée.
    • A missionary from India requested prayer for financial support of basic needs for ministering to Hindus.

The Mobilization of Two-Thirds-World Senders

Thank you for joining us this month as we take up “The Invitation” and join together with thousands of YWAMers from around the world as we pray and hear from God about the Mobilization of Two-Thirds-World Senders …

Before he left for India, missionary William Carey told his friend, “I will go down…if you hold the rope.” Like the person holding the rope for a mountain climber, the sender of missionaries plays a vital role in helping their friends succeed. Please join the YWAM family in prayer this month for those people who hold the rope for missionaries, who serve as senders. In particular, please pray for senders from the Two-Thirds World.

Last month YWAM’s monthly prayer day, called The Invitation, focused on the encouraging realities of how God is transforming the missions field into the mission force!

But there is another side to this unfolding story. In many locations both in and out of YWAM there are hundreds if not thousands of amazing men and women from the Two-Thirds-World who are called to go the lost. They have proven character, they have a clear call, often they have been equipped for cross-cultural work, but what they lack are senders.

Senders are any believers intentionally focused on sending and supporting missionaries. In his book Serving as Senders, Neil Pirolo identifies six different ways we can serve as senders: moral support, logistic support, financial support, prayer support, communication support, and re-entry support.

The apostle Paul highlighted the crucial role of senders in his letter to the church in Rome. He wrote, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’” (Romans 10:14-15, NIV).

Let us join together to pray for both more senders and more leaders (mobilizers) who will focus not only on launching the Two-Thirds-World missionaries but also on equipping the Two-Thirds-World senders. More believers serving as senders in the Two-Thirds-World will release another wave of amazing missionaries from the Two-Thirds-World.

Pray for Two-Thirds-World Senders:

  • The mobilization of many more Two-Thirds-World believers willing to serve as senders.
  • More leaders who will focus on equipping both those called to go and those called to send. These leaders could be pastors, business people, church leaders, community leaders, or family leaders.
  • A renewed emphasis on maintaining and developing good relationships and partnerships with local church leaders.
  • A change of identity in Two-Thirds-World churches from mission field to mission force. Pray for the discipleship process. Missions mobilization includes the long-term efforts necessary to shift how both individuals and whole communities perceive themselves, the Bible, and God’s mission.
  • The continued development of relevant models for funding missions from the Two-Thirds-World. There is still a huge need for wisdom on models for funding missions that do not stunt the growing capacity and responsibility of the local believers send out and sustain their own workers.
  • More missions mobilization resources developed by and for national leaders, mobilizers and trainers.
  • More principle-based training for leaders with a heart for missions.
  • The integration of topics such as Biblical basis of missions in the training of pastors in new sending countries.
  • Specifically pray for African missionaries and people to send them. In response to last-month’s prayer focus, Sunday Adewumi, a believer from Nigeria, wrote us and asked us to pray for the African mission movement: “I did my YWAM Discipleship Training School in South Africa in 2016, against all odds, in terms of immigration issues. I did my outreach with a group of five in South Africa. Thereafter, I applied to join staff but I was not accepted due to immigration issues. I love missions and my heart is in it. I still do it here in Nigeria. I’ve discovered that some missionaries from some Africa countries and less developed countries are confronted with immigration issues, finances, racial discrimination, and other issues. I hope we can pray for African missionaries on the points mentioned above.

How We Prayed:

February 2019 – Two-Thirds-World Missionaries

  • Several people showed enthusiasm on Facebook to pray for this topic: “Praying with great expectation!” and “Agreeing in prayer. (Psalm 67)”
  • One on Facebook asked: “Any mobilization for 2020 Olympics in Japan?”
  • International House of Prayer featured praying for Mobilization of Two-Thirds-World (Majority World) Missionaries in the “Prayer for YWAM” guide they distributed to their prayer partners.
  • We received an email from a woman in Nigeria asking God to grant the Two-Thirds-World missionaries safety and protection in all their lives and remove humiliation, killings, and maltreatment.

For decades there has been a dramatic shift in the makeup of the global body of Christ. In the 1900’s, most Christians lived in Western nations. But today, most of the followers of Jesus are from Asia, Africa and Latin America. As one would expect, there has been a similar shift in the makeup of the missions force. In 2010, three of the top ten countries sending the most missionaries were from Asia and Latin America: Brazil, South Korea and India. Other notable sending nations included South Africa, the Philippines, Mexico, China, Colombia, and Nigeria. (Melissa Steffen in Christianity Today.)

This means that missions is no longer “the West reaching the rest.” It is “the reached reaching the unreached.” According to mission researcher Jason Mandryk, “Today the Majority World Church sends out as many cross-cultural missionaries as does the Western Church.”

We are witnessing the globalization of missions where just about every country is both sending and receiving missionaries! This globalization of missions is also being enabled by several other trends such as unprecedented migration, a communications revolution and transportation technology. People are on the move. Both travel and communication are easier. But the globalization of missions may be disorienting, as there are new challenges and it requires new paradigms. The reached everywhere are partnering together to reach the unreached! This is nothing less than the global body of Christ partnering together to plant the body of Christ globally.

From the beginning, God lead YWAM to be international and interdenominational (Foundational Value #8). Today we are thrilled that over 50% of our staff are from the Majority World. Therefore, YWAM is uniquely poised to continue to play a significant role in mobilizing, equipping, sending and sustaining new missionaries from new sending countries.

Prepare to Pray:

You may find it helpful to appoint a facilitator for the Prepare to Pray exercise.

You will need a ball of string or twine. If you are a larger group, you may find it helpful to divide into smaller groups of 8-10 people, with one ball of string or twine for each group.

With the group standing in a circle, one person begins by holding the string. Being sure to keep hold of the end, they throw the ball of string to someone else in the circle. This person keeps hold of their piece of the string, then throws the ball of string to someone else. Continue throwing until everyone in the group is holding a piece of the string and the entire circle is connected by a network of string.

Pause at this point and take a look at the person who threw the ball of string to you. What do you appreciate about this person? What do you receive from them in your relationship as team members, or part of this community? In what ways is it easy to receive from them? In what ways do you feel resistant to what they may offer? Now take a look at the person to whom you threw the ball of string. In your relationship with them, what are you able to offer them that is a source of blessing or strength to them? In what ways is it easy to give to them? What might prevent you from giving to them?

A facilitator may gather feedback from these reflections. Your group may also find it helpful to consider any additional reflections from this exercise. How do you feel about giving to and receiving from others? In what ways does giving and receiving create connection within a group, across cultures, or across diverse socio-economic groups? Bring to mind all the ways our world is connected as people travel to study, work, take vacations, or volunteer. People also move around the globe as refugees, or displaced people. How does this inter-connectedness create opportunities to give and receive from one another, and especially to share our faith in Jesus? Think about the web of string you created – what can be created as we all play our part?

Pray for Two-Thirds-World Missionaries:

  • Praise God for the increasingly strong and mature national leadership from Majority-World sending nations.
  • Pray for the development of relevant missions mobilization resources.
  • Pray for openness of Western leaders to listen to and learn from Majority World leaders.
  • Pray for wisdom for partnership with national missions initiatives.
  • Pray for insight regarding relevant funding models for new workers from new sending countries.
  • Pray that biblical missions topics will be integrated into the training of pastors in new sending countries.
  • Pray for more coaching, mentoring and training available for Majority World missions leaders/mobilizers.
  • Pray for a renewed emphasis on maintaining and developing good relationships and partnerships with local church leaders.

Continue to Pray for The Send:

  • Pray for an upcoming event: The Send on Feb 23, 2019. Pray that those who attend will be activated into their evangelistic and missional calling. How We Prayed:

January 2019 – YWAM Foundational Values #13 – Be Relationship Oriented, #14 – Value the Individual, #15 Value Families

  • Three people responded with how these YWAM values have impacted their lives:
    • “One time, when I was a student, I was late for class. I thought the staff would be upset with me, but they weren’t. They had tea ready for me.”
    • “Seeing the way families around the base are still able to serve God and that having a family doesn’t have to slow you down or change things is pretty cool.”
    • “I was part of a school with 53 students. The leader of that school was also my one on one and I was so impressed in how he took time to hear God on my behalf and push me further than I could ever have gone by myself… he saw value in me where I didn’t . . .“
  • A group from YWAM Perth noted that they had been directed to pray for the Andrea and Andreas Frész family:
    • Don’t fear evil. God goes ahead and behind. Protected on all sides.
    • God had anointed them to lead and be the example of the Bridegroom of Christ. Be aware as they represent His image, be aware of the areas that the enemy would want to attack.
    • Picture of bird’s eye view. Could see the footprints of where they had been. Mountains ahead, but seeing from above the path was clearly set. God has made a path clearly even if they see mountains ahead.
